Winter riding is especially hard on your equipment. Nearly every consumable item wears much quicker in wet weather conditions. The following are a few tips to help minimize the impact of wet weather and keep you safer:- Make sure your brake pads are in good shape. Wet weather riding wears out brakes nearly twice as fast as good weather. Losing your brakes on the typical Bay Area descent is shocking experience. Make sure your brake pads are in good shape now.
- Inspect your tires and make sure they don't have flat spots or are excessively worn. Wet roads are especially harmful to tires and tires wear much quicker in wet conditions.
- Lube your chain more frequently in wet weather and before all rides (the night before, if possible). Lubrication breaks down much quicker in wet weather, which leads to excessive wear and tear on your drive train. An excessively worn drive train means less power transfer to the rear wheel and a lot of wasted energy.
